An Experimental Study on the Effect of Several Medicaments upon Vitally Pulpotomized Teeth

Abstract
This experimental study was performed to compare the effects of calcium hydroxide, formocresol, glutaraldehyde, etc. on the amputated vital pulp tissues. Eight premolars of each sample, tota172 premolars from 9 young healthy dogs were pulpotomized by one of the 8 different methods. Three dogs were sacrified 3 weeks and other 6 dogs were sacrified 30 weeks later.
The results were as follows:
1. The inflammatory change of remaining pulp tissues was lower and tissue reaction was more favorable in the pulps capped with calcium hydroxide-formocresol mixture than using calcium hydroxide only.
2. The degenerative change of remaining pulp tissue was less iri the pulps capped with calcium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide-formocresol mixture than in those treated with formocresol for 5 minutes before capping.
3. In the combined methods of 2% glutaraldehyde and calcium hydroxide, inflammatory change was lower and vitality of remaining pulp tissues was relatively good compared with the combination of formocresol and calcium hydorxide.
4. In the groups of pulp capping with zinc oxide eugenol instead of calcium hydroxide after using 2% glutaraldehyde or formocresol for 5 minutes, normal structure of pulp tissue was hardly seen and degenerative change appeared to be severe.
5. Shape, structure and amount of dentin bridge were various depending on the used medicaments. The vitality of the pulp tissue below dentin-like bridge was more favorable than that below bone-like bridge, and the less number of microtuble in the dentin bridge were, the more favorable results were seen.
6. In general, the vitality of remaining pulp tissues after vital pulpotomy seemed to be declined in long term groups.
In this experimental study of several medicaments on vitally pulpotomized teeth, the vitality of the remaining pulp tissues was more favorable in the combination method of glutaraldehyde and calcium hydroxide than any other method.
